Med Grill 4.40/5

Med Grill (Royal Oak) Restaurant Info

For a special occasion Mr. Blue and Miss Violet were invited to have a meal at the Med Grill restaurant in the Royal Oak area of Victoria. We have been here before, however, we have never officially done a food review on the place! There is no better time than the present.

Because of the occasion, we were provided the opportunity to have a set dinner menu for the evening. This is a four course meal for $23.97 (before tax). We decided to take full advantage of it as the descriptions sounded very delicious. We started off with an antipasto which was toasted Nan bread served with basil pesto, caramelized red onions, brie cheese, and balsamic reduction. Very tasty and very fresh, although we wished there were more. I guess that's what the complimentary bread basket is for! Following the antipasto came the salad or soup dish. We decided to try the Butternut Squash Zuppa which is a soup garnished with a nutmeg infused creme freche. Very creamy and warms the stomach through and through with that hearty home kind of feeling.

The main course came third and everyone ordered the same dish. An 8 oz. chargrilled New York Steak with a mushroom peppercorn demi acommpanied with roasted garlic whipped potatoes. The steak was grilled to perfection and the sauce was salty yet perfectly attuned for the entree. Garlic mashed potatoes can never go wrong especially when paired with a meat entree; meat & potatoes! Even the side vegetables were decent after being blanched and lightly seasoned. We ate every bite of our third dish and were delightfully full, but wait there is always room for dessert. We tried two different desserts: 1) Strawberry Cheese Cake covered in a chocolate ganache, whipped cream, creme anglaise, and mint; 2) Sticky Toffee Pudding that is a date and ginger cake served with warm caramel sauce, vanilla ice cream, and gooseberries. Both were not too sweet, nor too overwhelming, yet very fluffy. The gooseberries were a nicely added touch of tartness to the sticky toffee pudding.

Conclusion: we have been to Med Grill a few times before and the food was between average to slightly above average at most times. The service is generally reliable, the food is fairly quick to come out, and there are balcony options for the when the weather is nicer. The set course dinner menu though is a whole step above what the normal menu gives you and is what we recommend having when it is available. The set dinner menu is not always around but when it is and if you are looking for a decent course style meal then it is something to definitely try out.
