Sushi Harbor - Wish There Was Moor

Coming home from The Potholes, we decided to stop in Langford for a bite and came across a new Japanese restaurant by the name of Sushi Harbor. The plaza and the dining area were pretty deserted when we arrived. Considering that we were in Langford getting sushi, I didn't think much of it. In hindsight, there may have been just cause.

The interior of Sushi Harbor was small, but pleasant. When we entered we were greeted with a “sit wherever you like” opposed to “hello”. That should have been another indication of how the service was to play out. Once seated, we had our menus plopped in front of us and had a chance to peruse their wide assortment of sushi. They seemed to dabble with typical sushi items, as well as fusion-type rolls, such as baked rolls, or rolls with cream cheese. The prices were a little steep, but four of us decided to share five rolls. We decided on: a Langford roll, a Duncan roll, a Hawaii Volcano Roll, a Maple Bay roll, and a Kamikaze roll.

It didn't take too long before our server returned and plopped the sushi before us with no explanation of what each roll was or if we'd like anything else. The various rolls were topped with salmon, tuna, avocado, eel, and spicy tuna, which was somewhat of a fish tartar on that particular roll. The rolls were quite pleasant in taste, and for the most part, delicious and well presented. The volcano roll, a baked sushi roll topped with salmon, was especially note worthy. The rice was a little dry, but what can one expect after sticking sushi in the oven? It was savory, and satisfying, delivering lots of flavour with each bite. Another friend had ordered the Nabeyaki Udon, which looked and smelled quite good, accompanied with two tempura prawns, and a whack-load of vegetables in the broth
However, bang-for-buck? Well, we each had about 1 ¼ of the sushi rolls, yet not one of us was full after spending $20. On top of that, service was atrocious. Not once did our server come back to check on us, and she seemed to make it a point to socialize with us as little as possible. I give credit for refilling our drinks once, but when it came time to get the bill, it was once again dumped at our table without so much as a peep from her.

Overall, the food was tasty, but the service and value just aren't worth it. If you happen to be in the Langford area and don't mind spending extra, feel free to, but it's certainly not worth going out of your way for when there are many other places to dine at in town. In my opinion, Bon Sushi serves similar sushi for slightly less and provides a much more pleasant dining experience.

Cheers,

Mr. Pink
