Bon Sushi 2 - Thumbs up!

Bon Sushi 2 (Royal Oak - Saanich)

Bon Sushi in Oak Bay has recently opened up another restaurant in the Royal Oak district in Saanich. Of course, after having such a great meal at the original Bon Sushi in Oak Bay it only made sense for us to try the new location afterwards. The menu is exactly the same, however, we don't have to drive nearly as far to get to it. There's also more available free parking, and well, it's new!

Mr. Blue, Mr. Pink, and Miss Violet were in attendance, and boy were we hungry. We all agreed to just order a ton of rolls, split them up, and then devour them piece by piece. We really enjoyed the 'Hot Night Roll' from the original location so we definitely had to order that again. On top of that we ordered a Dynamite roll (10 piece), Calamari roll, Baked Salmon roll, Rainbow roll, Unagi roll, and a Seared Tuna sashimi plate. We totaled it all up before placing the order and came to a subtotal of $59 to split between the three of us. That's not bad for 20 bucks a head.

The food came in relatively short order so we dug in. The seared tuna sashimi was a great starter to 'open our stomachs' up to the incoming rolls. We highly recommend it, albeit small, but was very tasty. Much like its previous location the rolls were very well wrapped and not just a lump of rice with a small piece of meat (or veggie) in the middle (fist in the air at Fujiya). Like last time, the ingredients were fresh and the portion sizes were decent. The hot night roll, is again a solid hit. The calamari roll was decent, and the dynamite roll was pretty standard. The baked salmon roll was cooked perfectly and came with a very delicious sauce. The rainbow roll was subpar unfortunately, compared to other restaurants like Shizen Sushi. Putting avocado on top of a rainbow roll where there should be more fish is not recommended. We all agreed we have had better rainbow rolls at many other restaurants. The unagi roll is as you'd expect, a pan fried unagi eel in a roll with a japanese soy type sauce. Nothing extra spectacular about it, yet it was still decent.

All in all, the sushi is selective in general. There are some rolls which we'd definitely have seconds on and there are others that we'd probably not order again. The hot night roll, baked salmon roll, and calamari rolls were definitely a hit. In fact, I believe we all wanted to have a second hot night roll to share as it was that good after we had the first one.

Thumbs up, but take care on what you order! It may take you a trip or two to find out what your tastebuds prefer. We suggest the hot night roll again ;).
